A STORM IN MY HEAD OF PLANNING

A oday, ideas bouncing around in my head. First on the exact location of the house. We are particularly fortunate to have several options to locate our home. The terrain is vast and cadastre allows us "a lousse" for the siting of the building. The first choice that we made was in a wooded area of land where drainage should be to ensure a dry field. The wooded area is ideal for the type of building we want to do, but as the building will be autonomous, we must think about the wind turbine will be installed to provide us with much of the electricity needed for the proper functioning of the house . A wooded area is always less than a windy prairie. That's why I wonder if we should not implement our house on the edge of the meadow that lies about 150 meters higher. At this point the winds would be more favorable.

Then comes the idea of the slab. As the basement traditionally built houses with typical Quebec are expensive, inefficient energy heated and difficult, we opt for a concrete slab foundation with sole protected from freezing. I inquired recently about the concrete slab-cutters developed by Archibio . The idea sounds interesting. But, after calculation, it seems that the design of a concrete slab-cutters use a lot of concrete, so it will necessarily be a higher cost. A concrete footing with traditional 29-feet on 29 feet (9 meters by 9 meters) uses approximately 12 cubic meters of concrete. The concrete slab-cutters of the same size would use 25 cubic meters of concrete. At $ 160 per cubic meter, the calculation is quickly!

The structure is post and beam assembly to mortise and tenon, that's for sure. Early in my reflection, I thought it would be nice to isolate with Airmetic Soybeans , the cost has discouraged me. We are talking about $ 3.50 square foot (about $ 34 per square meter). I then thought rockwool . Not bad, but quite expensive too. I finally came across an isolation technique developed by the Research Group of Ecological foreshore (see video below) which is to insulate with straw. Straw is a healthy material, economical and environmentally friendly. The use straw as insulation does not new either. I will explain in detail the principle of GREB in another post. In the meantime I invite you to watch this movie that introduces the philosophy of Greb.

B othing is what started several months in our heads, we must begin proper planning of our future site. Produce plans and specifications as accurate as possible and follow as possible. We will keep this phrase in mind throughout the process. Such an estimate, it can be hard to establish, but it pays to any levels. The most difficult but will respect it, like all budgets elsewhere. When building his own house, desires often outweigh the actual needs. Several small stress are therefore required: Money, # 1 stressor, time, machinery, desires and requirements versus actual needs. It is important to first identify our goals and then plan their implementation.
The coming weeks will therefore be devoted to planning our basic site.

REASON

Some people ask me why build a house "green" and increasingly autonomous. "You'll have no electricity" they tell me. Well, my answer to all with this little video which I hope will reflect in more than one!

It eats to excess, drink to excess, have fun with excess, we cruise to the death, they kiss to the death, we start over and over again excessive. It consumes our friendships, our loves, our jobs, our whole lives.

Now, how do you get out of this downward spiral?

HERE "MA" REASON (actually one of my reasons ...)

To my son Anthony, for he has "some reason to hope" .

U n increasing number of people build their habitat in order to take account of major contemporary issues associated with the environmental crisis as: resource degradation, degradation of ecosystems and the deteriorating quality of life. An original approach is to build a écohabitat. Sustainable human habitat (écohabitat) is now an inescapable fact. The environmental crisis, we can see that the planet's resources are scarce and the capacity of ecosystems to absorb waste from human activities is decreasing. It forces us to reinvent our lifestyles and the way we conceive our relationship to nature. 1

I decided to write this blog as a diary that will witness an exceptional adventure that will take us to the end, I hope, the ultimate fulfillment, the construction of our écohabitat. A home "green" energy independence, good health of its occupants and that fits perfectly into its environment. You can follow our story and share our daily throughout the research process and reflection until the very end of construction.

Welcome aboard!

Alex

Tangier -------- ------------------- طنجة

I dedicate this article to gourmet

City History

The geographical and strategic Tangier had intended from its inception to a story uncommon. Rarely was more coveted city! The portion of civilizations mentioned above attests.
Conquered, recovery, free, Tangier has its blend different influences to increase its cultural potential.
During the first half of the twentieth century, Tangier was ruled by an "international authority" led by a dozen European diplomats. The city had its own administration and its own tax freedom lois.La attracted banks and companies and contributed to the richness of Tangier. In parallel, many fraudulent activities were organized smuggling, money laundering and prostitution ...
After its final integration in the Kingdom of Morocco in 1956, the special status of the town disappeared and the city was "cleaned". Returned to Morocco, Tangier will keep forever in the footsteps of history with this incredible legacy for this very special cosmopolitan atmosphere.

Tangier, the gateway to the Atlantic

Crossroads of Civilization at the crossroads of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean, "Tanger la blanche" is the gateway to the African continent. Its privileged
(ocean, sea, mountains, forests and crops), its climate temperate, its monuments and museums have attracted many Europeans. And what Europeans! Eugene Delacroix, Henri Matisse, Jean Genet, Joseph Kessel, Samuel Beckett, to name a few, have lived in Tangier.
City of Africa nearest to Europe, it has long been coveted for its strategic position. Since its foundation in the fourth century BC, Carthaginians, Romans, Phoenicians, Berbers, Vandals, Spaniards, Portuguese, French and English have hotly disputed.

A cosmopolitan

crossroads Strategic Tangier the guardian of Detroit has been the domination of many civilizations. These various influences have shaped over time by a city rich in cultural diversity.
Many monuments and museums bear witness to the city's international past. Hispanic and Andalusian influences are particularly present in the medina. In the modern city, contemporary architecture is marked by the French know-how.
Obviously, Tangier has many masterpieces of Islamic architecture as the Kasbah or the garden of the palace famous for its exotic plants and fruit trees.
Tourist

Like most Moroccan cities, Tangier is divided into two: the old medina and the new town, built by the French in the early twentieth century the image of the place of France .
At the entrance of the Medina is the Grand Socco (the great souk), dear to Joseph Kessel who devoted a book. From there, you've seen on the minaret in polychrome majolica of the Sidi Bou Abid Mosque. The ceaseless tumult merchants mingled scents of spices to sensory stimulation more interesting. We understand better why so many artists have succumbed to this ambiance.En wandering the streets of the medina you will find the beautiful Place du Petit Socco, ideal place to enjoy a good tea with mint. Further, a terrace offering breathtaking views of the Strait of Gibraltar where multiple trips venues, including the famous Caves of Hercules.

From the Kasbah you can visit the sultan's palace and its gardens. The site now houses the Museum of Moroccan Arts and the Museum of Antiquities. North-east of the Kasbah, sip mint tea while enjoying the beautiful view of Hafa cafe, a mythical place that has seen celebrities from around the world.
Finally, walkers certainly prefer the beaches of Tangier to museums. Swimmers will also be filled! It is possible to swim in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic on the same day.

Agadir

I look forward to seeing you every Saturday for a town you speak of my country MOROCCO

This Saturday I'm telling you my hometown Agadir. I miss her hugely, it's been 1year and 10 months that I have not gone over there I miss

City History
Probably founded by the Berbers, Agadir attracts sailors from the outset that line its shores. Bay sheltered from the wind, fertile land and fresh water source (the "founty"), Agadir has everything. In 1505 the Portuguese established a trading post and built a port.

In 1541, Sultan Mohammed Sheikh saadien, interested in the strategic position of Agadir to control the "gold road", captured the city. In the seventeenth century, Agadir is controlled by Berbers. Port trade is growing strongly, the prosperous city

In 1760, the Alawite sultan Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah is jealous of that port trade with Europe. He built the port of Essaouira a hundred miles north to divert the European trade. It's a blow to Agadir and the city gradually depopulated. In the early twentieth century, the population of Agadir is less than 1000 inhabitants.
The first half of the twentieth century saw the return of Agadir on the economic scene. Agriculture and Fisheries to allow the city to develop a major port. Canneries are built and becomes the first Agadir sardine port in the world. This business has never ceased, Agadir remains today 1 fishing port in the country.

Unfortunately, February 29, 1960 at 11:47 p.m., the city is ravaged by a terrible earthquake which will be 15 000 deaths. Almost all the houses are destroyed in seconds. The whole country is very moved and reconstruction of Agadir is a national challenge. Two years later, the city rising from the ashes ... in compliance with earthquake standards.
Today, Agadir is an important economic hub, thanks to its port. Morocco's second resort town after Marrakesh, the city is known for its beautiful seaside resort.

vestiges of the past disappeared
Agadir is a modern city located on an exceptional site. A beautiful bay spreads its 20 km beach illuminated by the sun in 300 days this year.
The city is renowned for the quality of its hotels, its restaurants and sporting facilities. Many activities (jet skiing, diving, fishing, sailing, tennis, golf, horseback riding, dance ...) are proposed. In summary, Agadir delight all vacationers seeking relaxation.
However, all guests will not be satisfied from the beach and sun. Some would like to find a face of traditional Morocco.
Destroyed in 1960 by a terrible earthquake, the old Agadir no longer exists. The only vestiges of the past the city you will find the museum or the ruins of the Kasbah . Note the presence of a site, the new Agadir medina, built as a tribute to the Moroccan craft industry and contain the characteristics of a traditional medina. Apart from these two examples, Agadir is devoid of genuine traditional monuments. The modern city is still worth visiting, especially the Museum of Berber culture . Synonym
vacation, Agadir is the ideal stage before embarking on trips to the hinterland, the Souss Massa National Park , Anti Atlas and the Sahara. This is where you can discover another side than that of modern Morocco.
